Building Community Through Better Relationships

Fitting Dreams In Your Current Reality

overworked-server

Visiting with a young server in a casual dining restaurant, she shared that her experience at a local college was going horribly. She wanted to improve her position in life. A college degree was an important dream. She even had entrepreneurial aspirations. Her problem was that classes were online. She had no experience learning in that environment. Furthermore, teachers were unresponsive. The material was difficult. She considered quitting because people like her really were not made for school. Besides, she had a good job at a well-established restaurant. To the question of what she wanted to do, she said that she really didn’t know; but she had stuff in her head. In fact, she did know what she wanted to do. She could not fit her dreams into her current reality. She needed a new reality where her dreams would fit. What to do? What to do?

Good Idea
The server had an admirable idea. She wanted education to improve her position in life. She clearly needed confidence. More importantly, she needed guidance! Sound familiar? Her current reality did not include either of these essential success characteristics. Historic explorers used local guides for a reason. Despite the explorers’ knowledge and courage, they still benefited from someone who knew the landscape where they traveled. The server was not in uncharted territory. She simply did not know anyone who had navigated it. A good idea requires guidance. It demands support.

Better Execution
Upon establishing the goal and starting down the path, relentlessly secure resources to execute successfully. Tutors, counselors, graduates all have advice to navigate academic terrain. Mentors, accountability partners, trusted advisers perform similar function for professionals. These resources do not necessarily require any costs. But, they do require boldness and tenacity to locate and use. So, ask for help. When the current reality employs the necessary resources, the experience is less of an adventure, more of a vigorous hike. Regarding the server’s studies, she did not know, what she did not know. The good news is that execution can improve. Plans can change during the journey. Help is available. Courage is the next step.

“If you want something you’ve never had you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.” – Thomas Jefferson. Change direction. It is the journey, as much as the destination. The journey represents the current reality. Take another step. Obtain wise counsel. Start by asking, not complaining. Definitely ask a trusted source. Perhaps that source has a referral to someone who can better deliver the necessary help. Next, realize that the journey reflects the adventure which represents the real value of success. Treasure the journey. Upon reaching the goal immediately set a loftier, crazier one. The important skill is achieving the goal. Never settle. The more times goals are achieved, the easier it is to reach the next one. Continue to stretch reality so that even bigger dreams will fit in it!

Thanks Brandon!
