Turning Point

“People do not change until the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.” People are inspired to action through many forces. Influence from other people move individuals to action. Religious revelation moves another person to change behaviors. A new idea spawned from reading or hearing a respected thinker can alter yet, another path. In all cases, change involves movement and that action requires a turning point.

A turning point is the location where movement results in a change of direction. It is not the force itself that causes the change in direction. It is a force applied when there is an opportunity to change. A car that changes direction in the middle of the highway will likely create an accident. However, a car that changes direction at an intersection has the opportunity to effectively complete its journey. So, what journey are you trying to complete? And, how do you complete it effectively? Have you reached your turning point?

Having awareness, the genesis of an idea, or the willingness to go forward, all reflect the start of a journey. Just like a physical journey starts with a physical step, a life journey starts with a single idea. It is an idea that identifies a personal goal before pursuing it. But, goals change overtime. A child’s goal maybe becoming the starting pitcher for the first game of the season. A few years later, that same person’s most important goal is being accepted to State University. The change in goals is a byproduct of evolving priorities. The desired result is a functioning adult that has learned from these and other experiences. Various turning points contributed to the eventual success. It could be a challenge from a better athlete on the team, or an Algebra teacher that convinces the youngster that they have a brilliantly analytical mind. Either way, success occurs when someone embraces such influences to turn their individual path toward a successful destination.

As those influences turn individuals toward a specific destination, a purpose comes into focus. During the journey, maps and directions are available. They help, but are usually too generic to be instructions for personal destinies. Individuals will still occasionally get off the path despite well-intentioned guidance. Not all advice is good advice. By the same token, individuals will get back on the path when they realize that more individualized guidance can re-align them with personal values. Not all advice is bad advice. Either way, make a decision.

So, what is the turning point? It differs for each individual. The turning point can be a spiritual conversion, timely guidance, a near-death experience, or a life-producing birth. What is important is that individuals are attentive to turning points in their personal journey. Firmly focusing on personal values helps identify turning points. Individuals will encounter guideposts, new ideas, and special people. Regardless, success requires making intentional decisions to move forward. Locate the turning point. Enjoy the journey. Celebrate with others. Under all circumstances, own the consequences. Each individual’s consequences are for them, alone. Choose wisely!

A Date With Destiny

I have a date with Destiny. She just doesn’t know it yet. She is beautiful, seductive and desirable. And, I am going to make her mine!

Before stalking became a concept that parents explained to elementary school children, people pursued the object of their affection relentlessly. Unfortunately, in modern society, obsession implies serious romantic and legal complications. In the personal success world, it still reflects the best path to achieve your stated intentions. With regards to accomplishing individual achievements Destiny is not really a woman, but a personal purpose. She is the objective of your life’s desire. Destiny is your reason for being!

Like many women, the challenge with Destiny is that she is not easy. No matter how much you love her or the promises you make, you must actively and strategically pursue her! A goal without a plan is merely a dream. Consequently, with specific tactics and intentionality anyone can hook up with their Destiny. Here is how:

What does Destiny look like? Where is she? It is impossible to secure a goal without identifying it. Create a crystal clear picture of your individual Destiny. Whether it is money, power, fame, influence or service, be crystal clear about the object of your purpose. If you singularly want to serve the poor, then complain about your impoverished surroundings, then you have misled Destiny and yourself. Plan, then execute with tenacity and alignment. Know exactly what you want so that you know it when you see it. Most importantly, you will know it when you get it!

Love is not necessarily an exclusive, nor lifetime commitment; and neither is Destiny. Successful people love spouses, institutions, friends, and family members with equal zeal. But regarding Destiny, you must commit passionately to love your time together. Not necessarily singularly, but undoubtedly passionately! Experiencing true love requires investment: your time, talent, emotion and money. Pursuing Destiny is an investment because a greater reward is expected. Lust is an expenditure. After spending, the object and the experience are gone. At best it is a pleasant memory. Investing in your Destiny allows for long-term benefits. Furthermore, you can reach back inside yourself later and repeat the selfless denial that yielded your success. Your love for Destiny will justify the sacrifice required to pursue her. And the resultant glow is radiant!

To achieve life goals, declare your Destiny. I don’t know the only Destiny. There are others. All are beautiful and seductive in their own unique ways. Locate yours! Create expectations. Put a timeframe on it. Love delayed is love denied! Now make a date with Destiny, then pursue her with reckless abandon. Once securing her, you’ll agree that nothing else is like it. And of course, make plans to get together again soon!!

Live By Faith, Opportunities Are Imminent

Two accomplished business professionals were discussing their next major move. They moaned about the state of the economy, pressures in their personal lives, and the lack of support for business growth. Finally, the older professional leaped up and exclaimed, “I have to live by faith because the opportunities are imminent!!” If not now, when? Despite all the unique circumstances that trouble people in their daily lives, opportunities abound in every corner of life and society. So, who is really interested in securing them and expanding their fortunes?

Either someone believes opportunities are available, or they don’t. The belief is not necessarily rational, emotional, nor logical. It is simply a matter of interpreting the facts. The person who firmly believes that opportunities for progress are available will seek those opportunities wholeheartedly. The person who does not believe will not bother looking. It is easier to sit on the sidelines and complain; where they will find plenty of company. But the conqueror who exercises faith and seeks fortune, will eventually discover it. Criticism will come from the sidelines: she is too good for us; or worse, she doesn’t remember where she came from. Conveniently, they have forgotten the chance they had to join the adventure.

Unfortunately, opportunities do not wait on the side of the road. Pursuing unseen opportunities require preparation, then action. They start with a dream. And, dreams mean work! Gathering the tools, earning the education, and accepting responsibility for consequences are all part of the work involved in securing opportunities. But, the journey is not simple. The necessary activities are not routine. The opportunities are not obvious, but they are imminent! First, faith must be summoned to believe that opportunities are there. Now, action takes control to relentlessly seek them. Test what you find. Analyze the results. Keep pursuing until discovering the outcome that you deserve.

Men rarely marry the first girl they kiss. It is equally unlikely that the first attractive opportunity is the best one. The adventure must focus on the desired result. Upon believing that your destiny of wild success is available, what sense does it make to stop looking after only finding moderate success? Before seeking your imminent opportunity, start with a clear vision of what your individual success looks like. Your success is not defined by the media, your community, or your family. Each of us has an individual and personal destiny. Identify it, then seek it singularly. Your vision of success may evolve and change. Nevertheless, if your faith clearly points toward a certain destiny and you are equipped to do the work, then relentlessly pursuing your desired result is the final step.

Take a leap. Make a change. Ultimately, the optimist and the pessimist are both correct. If your faith leads you to an optimistic future, then begin the good works to achieve it. As for the pessimists who believe that disaster and pain is around the corner, just stay put. You will never be lonely waiting. Furthermore, disaster and pain will actually find you. Then, you can say that you were right. A negative outcome found you. However, for the professionals who decide to live by faith because the opportunities are imminent, prepare your skills, grab your tools and go get it!
